The Minister of Defence, Dr. Omane Boamah, has underscored the need for a balanced approach in deploying the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for internal security operations, stressing that the military should only be engaged in essential situations.

Speaking on the role of the GAF in maintaining national security, Dr. Boamah emphasized that while the military remained ready to assist in internal security matters, their involvement should not overshadow the primary responsibilities of the Ghana Police Service.

“Let’s try as much as possible to limit the invitation for the GAF to step in and do things that the Ghana Police Service is fully capable of handling,” he stated.

The Defence Minister assured the public that the government was committed to ensuring the military’s role was optimized for national security while allowing the police to take charge of routine law enforcement duties. He reiterated that the GAF would be utilized more productively and effectively, minimizing their direct involvement in civilian security operations.

Dr. Boamah’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions on security sector reforms and the need to strengthen the Ghana Police Service’s capacity to handle domestic security challenges.

His remarks reflect the government’s broader commitment to striking a balance between military and civilian security forces, ensuring that each institution effectively fulfills its mandate without unnecessary overlaps.
