A mural has been painted to mark the celebration of Italian Language Week in Ghana. The mural painted on a wall at the premises of the Piccola Biblioteca Italiana located at Patrice Lumumba Street, Accra, sought to depict the essence of reading and how reading connects to national development.
It was a pleasant sight as children and adults actively participated in the “Painting the World with Books” event organised by the Piccola Biblioteca Italiana as part of several activities marking the Italian Language Week in Ghana.
The painting exercise organised in partnership with the Italian Embassy in Ghana, the Ghana Italian Women Association and the Italian Business Association of Ghana, brought together aspiring artists and lovers of arts.
The Italian Ambassador to Ghana and Togo, Danielad ’Orlandi graced the event and led the team of aspiring artists to paint under the supervision of the Latsoplemplem Art Crew of Jamestown.
Speaking in an interview, a teacher at the Piccola Biblioteca Italiana, Victoria Zilocchi expressed the institution’s commitment to promoting the Italian Language. She outlined the activities for this year’s celebration of Italian Language Week. These include a photo exhibition of books written by Italian diplomats, open discussions on publishing in Ghana and Italy, a meeting of Cultures, a lecture on Beyond Gianni Rodari’s books and a talk on Playing with Gianni Rodari Stories.
Madam Zilocchi encouraged all who are interested in learning the Italian language to visit their office premises or connect with them on their social media handles.
The Latsoplemplem Art Crew comprises five young men who strongly believe art is their life. The leader of the team, Raphael Cobbinah, expressed his team’s excitement about being part of the project to paint a mural that promotes reading and learning. He was particularly impressed with how children largely participated in the event.

Mr Cobbinah encouraged parents and guardians to support their children who desire to be artists. According to him, there are great opportunities in the art industry. Also, he urged the government to invest in art education in schools. He appealed to the government to provide teaching and learning materials to boost the practicality of art in schools.
With their faces beaming with smiles, some children who participated in the event and shared their joy. The children loved the opportunity given to them to be part of the painting exercise and described it as very inspiring.
Giovanna Tissi, who spoke on behalf of the Ghana Italian Women Association underscored the need to celebrate the Italian language week.
According to her, one of the best ways to promote peace and development is through language.
Madam Tissi explained that as an organisation of women, they are committed to supporting events and initiatives that promote peace, unity and national development.
The event was climaxed with a painting on canvas, music, and dance.
