The organisation celebrated five families whose children, three girls and two boys, were successfully reunited with them after going missing between 2021 and 2024. The children’s special needs contributed significantly to their disappearance, as they were unable to find their way home or provide accurate information to aid quick reunification. Through sustained efforts by Missing Children Ghana, all five children were eventually located and reunited with their families.

In recognition of the long-term care responsibilities placed on the families, Missing Children Ghana had earlier provided financial support to some primary caregivers to help strengthen their small businesses and improve their capacity to care for their children. As part of the Christmas festivities, the caregivers, mostly mothers, were invited to the organisation’s office to share updates on the children’s wellbeing and receive food items and cash support to celebrate the season.

The celebration, held at the Missing Children Ghana Office, was supported by the Amazing Women of God and the Apau Asante Outreach Savers International. Volunteers of Missing Children Ghana and members of the Amazing Women of God group were also present. The gathering served as a moment of thanksgiving for successful reunifications, child protection interventions, and an opportunity to reflect on post-reunification challenges and solutions.

During a sharing session, the mothers reflected on life before their children went missing, the reunification process, and the realities of caregiving afterwards. Many highlighted persistent stigmatization from society, the emotional and financial strain of caring for children with special needs alongside other children, and limited access to resources. Despite these challenges, the caregivers expressed gratitude for the progress they have made.

They also outlined specific needs that could enhance their caregiving capacity, including monthly financial support for medications, assistance with rent, a freezer to expand a water and sobolo business, and capital to grow small-scale fruit businesses.

Addressing the families, Founder of Missing Children Ghana, Regina Asamoah, commended the mothers for their dedication and perseverance. She encouraged them to continue caring for their children with love and patience and to seek support whenever they feel overwhelmed rather than transferring frustration onto the children.

She reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting families beyond reunification through its Strengthening Families Beyond Reunification Project, aimed at ensuring long-term stability and child protection.

Representatives from the Amazing Women of God urged the families not to lose hope, encouraging them to see their children as purposeful and uniquely gifted, with God-given talents that would manifest in due time.

Speaking on behalf of the volunteers, Benedicta Molga encouraged caregivers to ignore negative societal comments and instead prioritise their children’s wellbeing, citing public figures who have successfully raised children with special needs despite criticism.

The event concluded with the presentation of hampers and cash donations to the families in appreciation of their unwavering care throughout the year.

Earlier in the festive season, Missing Children Ghana, in partnership with Nneka Youth Foundation and GJ Foods and More, also spread Christmas cheer to children at the Save Them Young Orphanage in Ashaiman and neighbouring communities. Over 200 packs of food were served, alongside donations of rice, drinks, toiletries, detergents, and other essential cooking items to support the home.

All partners called for increased support for various orphanages to enable them to adequately care for the children under their responsibility. The Save Them Young Orphanage currently houses over 60 children, including children with special needs.

About Missing Children Ghana

Missing Children Ghana (MCG) is the first non-profit and Public Benefit Organization in Ghana that engages the Ghana Police Service and Department of Social Welfare when a person (especially a Child) goes missing in Ghana, for any reason whatsoever.

Missing Children Ghana officially launched on May 23, 2023, started as an Initiative by Multiple Award-Winning Ghanaian Journalist, Regina Asamoah. Regina Asamoah has since May 2021 reunited hundreds of Missing Children in Ghana through her Missing Children Documentary Series.

The initiative which started as a documentary has evolved into a full project not just investigating where Missing Children are kept awaiting reunification but also giving the platform for families whose children are missing to share details that can help in contract tracing.

MCG reaches out to enlist the help of professionals and organizations in the child protection sector and the public in the search of missing children. MCG uses the various media platforms to share information to bring public awareness to cases of missing children and increase search efforts.

MCG provides affected families with knowledge and resources throughout the search and reunification while ensuring that all its services are free so that all families in need of help receive it, regardless of their financial situation.

MCG remains committed to the search as long as there are missing children.

Presently, MCG counts the Ghana Italian Women Association (GIWA) and IPMC Ghana among its collaborative partners.

Missing Children Ghana Empowers Youth at Assemblies of God Ghana 2023 Missionettes Rally -[Watch Video] https://www.mymctvonline.com/missing-children-ghana-empowers-youth-at-assemblies-of-god-ghana-2023-missionettes-rally-watch-video/ https://www.mymctvonline.com/missing-children-ghana-empowers-youth-at-assemblies-of-god-ghana-2023-missionettes-rally-watch-video/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2023 13:15:05 +0000 https://www.mymctvonline.com/?p=2504 The focus of the session was to evaluate the children’s familiarity with fundamental information such as the full names of family members, contact numbers, home addresses, and other essential details. Additionally, the event served as a platform to equip the children with skills to handle emergency situations effectively.

Guiding the interactive session was Regina Asamoah, the Executive Director of Missing Children Ghana. As she engaged with the young participants, she emphasized the importance of knowing comprehensive information about their families, including parents’ full names and contact details. Ms. Asamoah stressed that such details are vital for reuniting children with their families if they were ever to go missing.

“Knowing your parents’ name in full, their contact numbers, where they work, the name of the school you attend, where you stay, and which major landmark is close to your house are very important in helping to reunite you with your family in case you get missing,” she emphasized.

Ms. Asamoah who is also a child advocate, further urged mentors to ensure that children are adequately prepared for emergencies during events. Recommending identifiable attire in bright colors and the establishment of safe meeting points, she underscored the importance of fostering a sense of collective responsibility among the children.

“When you travel with the children for events, you have to ensure they all come in an identifiable attire, preferably bright colors. You have to encourage each one to look out for the other. You identify a safe spot where any of the children should go and wait for you in case they lose track of you. Always learn to prepare the children for emergencies,” she advised.

Addressing the mentors directly, Regina Asamoah encouraged them to be attentive and responsive to the needs of the children, particularly when they seek guidance at church. She emphasized that mentors often play a crucial role in the lives of children, and their attentiveness could potentially save a child from dangerous situations arising from abuse or poverty.

Belgian social worker Florence Van den Hende, who volunteers with Missing Children Ghana, urged the children to maintain awareness of their surroundings and promptly report any suspicious activities to their parents or guardians. Van den Hende, leveraging her dual role, emphasized the importance of children being vigilant and actively contributing to their own safety by communicating any concerns to their caregivers.

Representing the church, Mrs. Bessie Anoh Bonsu, the Teshie District Missionette Sponsor, expressed gratitude to the Missing Children Ghana team for conducting such an insightful session. She acknowledged the pivotal role the church plays in ensuring the safety of children and expressed confidence that the lessons learned would be disseminated within the church community to protect children from violence and exploitation.

The session, held on December 11, 2023, brought together participants from Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Cameroon, and the United States.

Zoé Colpaert, HEROES/Europe Program Manager at ICMEC, led the session, emphasizing the paramount importance of focusing on missing children and providing a comprehensive overview of Amber Alerts. Madam Colpaert delved into the history of Amber Alerts, the benefits of an alert system, existing alert systems, and the distinction between photo distribution frameworks and Rapid Emergency Child Alert Systems. Additionally, she highlighted the do’s and don’ts in the dissemination of photos of missing children.

According to Colpaert, a child going missing is a serious indicator of potential harm, making an immediate response crucial for a successful resolution and the well-being of the child. She underscored the significance of a rapid emergency child alert system, which has the power to mobilize entire communities for the swift search and safe recovery of a missing child.

Child Alert Systems currently exist in 34 countries globally, with the West African region seeing the launch of the Amber Alert in Nigeria in September 2022, making it the second country on the continent to implement such a system after South Africa.

Zoé Colpaert outlined the criteria for triggering an alert, emphasizing that alerts like Amber should only be used in specific, precise cases, approximately 3% of all missing children situations. Key criteria for launching an alert include imminent danger or serious harm to the child, sufficient information available for the public to assist in locating the child, and a risk assessment to determine the potential impact of the alert on the child’s safety.

Crucially, Colpaert highlighted the need for careful consideration even after a missing child has been found. Efforts should be made to stop the circulation of the child’s name and photos to prevent further calls and reports, she noted.

Setting up an Amber Alert system in a country requires collaboration among various institutions, including the police, prosecutor’s office, government and policymakers, and relevant NGOs. Colpaert emphasized that Amber Alert is one tool within a robust procedure, requiring an all-encompassing strategy.

In a brief remark, Regina Asamoah, Founder and Executive Director of Missing Children Ghana, expressed optimism despite the absence of Amber Alerts in Ghana. She assured that her organization would continue collaborating with key stakeholders in the ongoing search for missing children. Ms. Asamoah highlighted the support of IPMC Ghana, allowing families to report missing children easily through their website, www.missingchildrenghana.com, and dedicated hotlines.

Ms. Asamoah remains positive that, through collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, the Department of Social Welfare and other relevant stakeholders, steps can be taken towards the launch of a Rapid Emergency Child Alert System, such as the Amber Alert, in Ghana.

The virtual round table discussion, moderated by Athena Morgan, Africa Regional Manager at ICMEC, provided participants with an opportunity to ask questions and share thoughts on best practices in the use of Amber Alerts and dissemination of photos of missing children. The collaborative effort reflects a commitment to safeguarding children and addressing the challenges surrounding their disappearance.

These families, whose missing children were successfully reunited with them in 2021 and 2023, were recipients of cash grants aimed at fostering economic stability for enhanced child care.

The initiative, funded by the Family Based Care Alliance (FaBCA) and designed to disburse cash grants quarterly, seeks to empower families who have experienced the reunification of a missing child.

Executive Director Regina Asamoah personally presented the cash grants to the families, emphasizing the positive feedback received from the initial beneficiaries.

Explaining the rationale behind the project, Ms. Asamoah articulated, “The feedback from the first three beneficiaries of the first tranche disbursement is assuring that if more vulnerable families are supported to be economically viable, then they can adequately take care of their children.”

Strengthening Families Beyond Reunification Project Overview

Initiated by Missing Children Ghana, the Strengthening Families Project targets vulnerable families with children who have been reunited after experiencing abduction, trafficking, exploitation, or going missing. This research-driven initiative aims to enhance the economic capacity of mothers or guardians, recognizing that many of these families faced difficulties leading to the initial separation of their children.

On July 28, 2023, Missing Children Ghana formalized a one-year memorandum of understanding with the Family Based Care Alliance (FaBCA) to sustain this crucial initiative. FaBCA commits to providing cash support every quarter to selected families, primarily mothers or caregivers of the identified children.

Beneficiary Family Backgrounds

Nelson’s Family

Nelson, a 10-year-old deaf boy, was reported missing in Pabi, a community near Asamankese in the Eastern Region. He was later found in Krowor in the Greater Accra Region by a Good Samaritan and subsequently taken by the Department of Social Welfare to the Shelter for Abuse Children at Osu. In October 2021. Nelson was featured in the Missing Children Documentary Series by multiple award-winning journalist, Regina Asamoah. He was successfully reunited with his family on 22nd November, 2021.

Through the benevolence of the Chief of Atibie, Barima Asante Betiani II, and community support, Nelson underwent surgery and is currently enrolled at the Koforidua School for the deaf and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

In a demonstration of further support, Nelson’s single mother, who juggles the roles of a farmer and a petty trader, received a cash grant. The purpose of this financial assistance was to empower her business endeavors, ensuring not only Nelson’s well-being but also providing support to his six siblings.

Regina’s Family

Regina, a child with special needs, experienced a heartwarming reunion with her single mother in June 2021. As the second of nine children, Regina’s journey towards stability and care took a positive turn. To further support the family, a cash grant was provided, with the specific intention of boosting Regina’s mother’s waakye business. This financial assistance is aimed at not only ensuring Regina’s well-being but also contributing to the support of her eight siblings, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering the welfare of families with unique needs.

Nhyira’s Family

In a heartening development, 10-month-old Nhyira was successfully reunited with her mother in April 2023, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Missing Children Ghana and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). The reunion brought an end to a period of separation, offering a promising future for the mother and child.

Recognizing the financial challenges faced by Nhyira’s mother, she was granted a cash support to revive her pastries business. The assistance aims to offer a stable economic foundation, ensuring the overall well-being not only of the mother and Nhyira but also extending its positive impact to Nhyira’s brother.

Appeal for Collaborative Support

Regina Asamoah extended an appeal for collaboration with individuals, organizations, and corporate entities, emphasizing the critical role collective efforts play in impacting various projects implemented by Missing Children Ghana.

Currently overseeing four initiatives, including the Missing Children Documentary Series, Strengthening Families Beyond Reunification, Reading to End Violence against Boys and Girls, and Educational Tours, the organization aims to provide holistic development for children.

Regina Asamoah conveyed her heartfelt gratitude to the Ghana Italian Women Association (GIWA), IPMC Ghana, Plan International Ghana, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) Ghana, Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, Interplast Company Limited, and the Family Based Care Alliance for their unwavering and continuous support of the initiatives spearheaded by Missing Children Ghana. Their collaborative efforts play a pivotal role in advancing and sustaining the organization’s crucial projects aimed at ensuring the well-being and safety of children in Ghana.

About Missing Children Ghana

Established by multiple award-winning Ghanaian Journalist, Regina Asamoah, Missing Children Ghana is the first public benefit organization in Ghana dedicated to finding and reuniting missing children.
In a riveting milestone on May 24, 2023, Regina Asamoah officially unveiled the grand debut of Missing Children Ghana, a groundbreaking initiative that emerged triumphantly after two years of crafting the evocative Missing Children Documentary series.

This spectacular launch not only marked the second anniversary of the compelling documentary series but also stood as a beacon of hope, having successfully orchestrated the reunion of over 200 families with their missing loved ones.
As the spotlight shone on this momentous occasion, the event was further embellished with significance—it marked the inaugural celebration of International Missing Children’s Day in the heart of Ghana. Imagine the joy, the emotions, and the shared determination to make a lasting impact on the lives of those touched by the poignant stories woven into the fabric of the documentary series.

Regina Asamoah’s vision and relentless dedication were vividly brought to life in the launch of Missing Children Ghana. This isn’t just an organization; it’s a testament to the power of storytelling, compassion, and the unwavering commitment to reunite families torn apart by the heart-wrenching reality of missing loved ones.

Families grappling with the distressing experience of a missing loved one can now take a proactive step towards reuniting with them. Missing Children Ghana has established a user-friendly platform on its website (www.missingchildrenghana.com), where families can promptly report details about their missing relatives.

This digital hub becomes a central point for initiating the search process, allowing families to share crucial information that can aid in locating their loved ones. The website serves as more than just a reporting tool; it’s a virtual lifeline connecting families with the dedicated efforts of Missing Children Ghana.

But the collaboration doesn’t end there. Missing Children Ghana goes beyond the virtual realm, actively engaging with the Ghana Police Service and the Department of Social Welfare. This dynamic collaboration forms a powerful alliance, pooling resources and expertise to intensify the search for missing children or persons.

It’s a synergy of technology, community, and law enforcement working in harmony to address the critical issue of missing individuals. By leveraging both the online platform and strategic partnerships, Missing Children Ghana is a united force committed to bringing families back together.
