Speaking during the Africa Prosperity Dialogue 2025 at the Accra International Conference Centre on Thursday 30 January, Gwen Mwaba reiterated the bank’s commitment to addressing Africa’s infrastructure deficit.

“Bridging Africa’s infrastructure gap requires an estimated $130 billion to $170 billion annually. Addressing this challenge demands innovative approaches. Afreximbank is committed to financing transformative projects that will reshape the continent’s infrastructure landscape,” she stated.

She highlighted the bank’s ongoing efforts to mobilize both public and private investments to close the financing gap, which has long impeded the continent’s development. According to her, creating a sustainable infrastructure ecosystem requires not only financial backing but also strategic partnerships and policy harmonization to attract investments.

Mwaba further emphasised the importance of infrastructure in driving economic growth, fostering regional integration, and enhancing trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). She reaffirmed Afreximbank’s dedication to supporting projects that improve transport networks, energy systems, and digital connectivity, positioning Africa as a competitive global player.

“To attract investment, we must create ecosystems that foster transparency, reduce risks, and drive innovation. Only then can we transform Africa into an interconnected marketplace that benefits all its people. Beyond debt financing, Afreximbank is supporting infrastructure development through equity investments under its subsidiary, the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA). Through its comprehensive guarantee offerings and project preparation facility, Afreximbank is ensuring the successful realization of key infrastructure projects.

“Yet, infrastructure is not just about physical structures—it is about connections. It is about linking nations, communities, and economies. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a remarkable opportunity to enhance trade and foster collaboration,” she added

UNESCO names new sites to its World Heritage List – including one in the West Bank https://www.mymctvonline.com/cnbc-travel-unesco-names-new-sites-to-its-world-heritage-list-including-one-in-the-west-bank/ https://www.mymctvonline.com/cnbc-travel-unesco-names-new-sites-to-its-world-heritage-list-including-one-in-the-west-bank/#respond Mon, 02 Oct 2023 15:59:34 +0000 https://www.mymctvonline.com/?p=2139

The World Heritage Committee has named 42 new sites to UNESCO’s World Heritage List — including one in Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The newly inscribed properties were announced during the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee being held from Sept. 10 to 25 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Of the 50 “candidate sites” being considered, these made the list:

The ancient city of Tell es-Sultan — or Jericho in Hebrew — is the fourth site in the West Bank to make UNESCO’s list, according to UNESCO’s website, joining:

Located 250 meters below sea levels, Tell es-Sultan contains evidence of religious funeral practices, which included "plastering and decorating skulls of the deceased," according to a nomination document related to its UNESCO inscription.

The West Bank site — thought to be one of the oldest fortified cities in the world — dates to the 9th millennium B.C. and is marked by an oval-shaped tell, or mound, near the modern city of Jericho.

But Mounir Anastas, permanent delegate of Palestine to UNESCO, stated that Jericho marks the fifth site in the territory named to the list, the most important from a historical and religious perspective being the Old City of Jerusalem, according to an announcement on Sunday by the Saudi Press Agency.

The Old City of Jerusalem and its walls were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981, but UNESCO doesn’t list it under Israel or Palestine. Whereas other sites are listed by country, UNESCO lists the site separately, under “Jerusalem (Site proposed by Jordan).”

Israel, which joined UNESCO in 1949, has nine sites named to the list, including Masada, the Old City of Acre and the “White City” of Tel Aviv.

UNESCO’s decision to add Tell es-Sultan/Jericho to its World Heritage Site has angered Israeli officials, with Israel’s foreign ministry releasing a statement Sunday calling it a “cynical” ploy by the Palestinians to politicize UNESCO.

Anastas credited “all Arabs, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which made every effort to host the session and spared no effort to support the Palestinian cause in all international platforms,” according to the Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi Arabia’s sympathetic view of the Palestinians has been shaped by the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Saudi Arabia does not recognize Israel as a state and has refused to do so since the latter’s independence in 1948. Additionally, two of Islam’s holiest sites, Mecca and Medina, are also in Saudi Arabia, giving it a crucial role in the Muslim world when it comes to the issue of Palestine’s statehood.

Saudi Arabia told the U.S. Biden administration Sunday of its decision to freeze efforts to normalize relations with Israel. According to the Saudi-owned newspaper Elaph, an Israeli official had attributed the suspension to the Israeli government’s unwillingness to make any concessions to the Palestinians.

The United States stopped funding UNESCO after it recognized Palestine as a member in 2011. In December 2018, the United States, along with Israel, left UNESCO, alleging anti-Israeli bias at the agency.

In June, UNESCO announced that the U.S. planned to rejoin UNESCO — and pay more than $600 million in back dues — in an effort to counter-balance Chinese influence in the agency.

On Friday, the World Heritage Committee inscribed two sites in Ukraine to its List of World Heritage in Danger:

  • The Saint Sophia Cathedral and Lavra of Kyiv-Pechersk (Kyiv Monastery of the Caves)
  • The historic center of the city of Lviv

The committee noted both have been under permanent threat since the start of the Russian invasion despite “the many actions taken by the Ukrainian authorities to protect their cultural property,” according to UNESCO.

Kyiv's Saint Sophia Cathedral is now on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger.

“Their inclusion on the List of World Heritage in Danger reminds the 195 States parties to the Convention of their responsibility to monitor and contribute to the protection of these sites,” UNESCO stated.

The two sites join the historic center of the city of Odesa — named in January — to UNESCO’s “in danger” list.

Kim Jong Un And Vladimir Putin Meet For Talks In Russia https://www.mymctvonline.com/kim-jong-un-and-vladimir-putin-meet-for-talks-in-russia/ https://www.mymctvonline.com/kim-jong-un-and-vladimir-putin-meet-for-talks-in-russia/#respond Wed, 13 Sep 2023 10:55:59 +0000 https://www.mymctvonline.com/?p=1563
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has arrived via rail in Russia where he is due to meet President Vladimir Putin.
Mr Kim left Pyongyang for Russia on Sunday on his private train, North Korea’s state media reported.
It is not known where the leaders will meet, as Mr Kim’s train is reportedly heading north, away from the city of Vladivostok.
A US official said they were expected to discuss an arms deal as Russia faces a Ukrainian counter-offensive.
The Kremlin said that the “fully fledged visit” would cover “bilateral relations, the situation in the region and in the global arena”.
The meeting could take place as early as Tuesday local time – although the statement from the Kremlin said it would happen in the “coming days”.
Mr Kim left his train to meet Russian representatives when it pulled into the border station of Khasan on Tuesday morning.
Footage shows him stepping off the train onto a red carpet to be greeted by a Russian delegation as a brass band plays.
He also met Alexander Kozlov, Russia’s minister for natural resources. According to Oleg Kozhemyako, a regional governor who released footage of the meeting, they discussed the potential launch this year of joint tourism and agricultural projects.

Mr Kim’s train is rumoured to include at least 20 heavy bulletproof carriages. The extra weight means the train is very slow – it can only travel at around 37mph (59 km/h).

The North Korean leader’s last trip abroad was to Vladivostok in 2019 for a summit with Mr Putin after the collapse of nuclear disarmament talks with the then-US president, Donald Trump.
The Vostochny cosmodrome, located in Russia’s far east near the border with China, has been suggested as the possible meeting place for the two leaders.
It is the country’s first commercial space centre and is one of Mr Putin’s pet projects.
The Russian president has announced he plans to go to the cosmodrome but has not confirmed that Mr Kim will meet him there. Responding to a question at the Eastern Economic Forum, Mr Putin said: “When I get there, you will know”.
North Korea may seek co-operation from Russia on its space programme, which late last month failed a for second time to place a spy satellite in orbit after a rocket failure.
The White House said it had new information that negotiations between the Russia and North Korea were on a weapons deal “actively advancing”.
National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said Russia’s Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu had tried to “convince Pyongyang to sell artillery ammunition” to Russia during a recent visit to North Korea.
Both sides have denied the reports.
The US and its allies have expressed concern over the possibility of closer military ties between Russia and North Korea.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia would always act in its national interest.
“The interests of our two countries are important to us, and not warnings from Washington,” he was quoted as saying by Russian media.
North Korea also wants food aid and possibly technology to help its banned nuclear and missiles programme, analysts say.

Libyan floods: Derna city alone recovers 1,000 bodies – minister https://www.mymctvonline.com/libyan-floods-derna-city-alone-recovers-1000-bodies-minister/ https://www.mymctvonline.com/libyan-floods-derna-city-alone-recovers-1000-bodies-minister/#respond Tue, 12 Sep 2023 10:41:18 +0000 https://www.mymctvonline.com/?p=1513
The death toll from floods in Libya in one city alone stands at more than 1,000, a senior official who visited the eastern port of Derna has said.
“Bodies are lying everywhere,” the minister from the eastern-based government told Reuters news agency.
Much of Derna, which has about 100,000 residents, is under water after two dams and four bridges collapsed.
The flooding, which has also devastated other coastal areas, is as a result of a Storm Daniel which hit on Sunday.
“The number of bodies recovered in Derna is more [than] 1,000,” Hichem Chkiouat, the aviation minister and part of the eastern government’s emergency response committee, told Reuters by phone.
He said the final death toll was expected to be much higher.
“I am not exaggerating when I say that 25% of the city has disappeared. Many, many buildings have collapsed.”

The eastern cities of Benghazi, Soussa and Al-Marj have also all been affected.
Earlier, Eastern Prime Minister Osama Hamad told a Libyan TV channel it was estimated that 2,000 people had died and thousands were missing: “Entire neighbourhoods in Derna have disappeared, along with their residents… swept away by water.”
Alongside areas in the east, the western city of Misrata was among those hit by the floods.
Libya has been in political chaos since long-serving ruler Col Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown and killed in 2011 – leaving the country effectively split with an interim, internationally recognised government operating from the capital, Tripoli, and another one in the east.
According to Libyan journalist Abdulkader Assad, this is hampering rescue efforts as the various authorities are not able to respond with agility to a natural disaster.
“There are no rescue teams, there are no trained rescuers in Libya. Everything over the last 12 years was about war,” he told the BBC.
“There are two governments in Libya… and that is actually slowing down the help that is coming to Libya because it’s a little bit confusing. You have people who are pledging help but the help is not coming.”

Crackdown On Ukrainian Conscription Officials Involved In Bribery https://www.mymctvonline.com/crackdown-on-ukrainian-conscription-officials-involved-in-bribery/ Tue, 22 Aug 2023 18:34:06 +0000 https://dev2609.marketing-aide.com/?p=1336

Ukrainian conscription officials accused of taking bribes and smuggling people out of the country have been sacked in an anti-corruption purge.

Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed more than 30 people face criminal charges, with all regional officials in charge of military conscription removed.

He said bribery at a time of war is “high treason”.

It comes amid efforts to bolster the armed forces, as Ukraine’s counter-offensive operation continues.

A statement from the president’s office said corruption allegations “pose a threat to Ukraine’s national security and undermine confidence in state institutions”.

Replacement officials will be chosen from candidates who have battlefield experience and have been vetted by the intelligence service, it continued.

Officials taking cash and cryptocurrency bribes or helping people eligible to be called up to fight to leave Ukraine are among the charges, said Mr Zelensky, in a video posted on social media.

Ukraine’s general mobilisation rules mean all men over the age of 18 capable of fighting are eligible to be conscripted, and most adult men under the age of 60 are prohibited from leaving the country.

“We are dismissing all regional military commissars,” he said.

“This system should be run by people who know exactly what war is and why cynicism and bribery at a time of war is high treason.”

He said the conscription system “is not working decently”, adding: “The way they treat warriors, the way they treat their duties, it’s just immoral.”

The corruption came to light after an inspection of local army offices.

Mr Zelensky said 112 criminal proceedings against 33 suspects have been launched against regional officials, and that abuses had been found across the country.

Neither Ukraine or Russia reveal how many of their soldiers have been killed since the February 2022 invasion, but both have sought recruits widely as attritional fighting continues.

The anti-corruption drive is the latest to be launched by the Zelensky government.

In January 11 officials accused of corruption left their posts and the head of the country’s Supreme Court was detained in May over bribery allegations.

Corruption in public services has been a long-running problem in Ukraine and tackling it is one of the tests the country would have to pass to join Western institutions like the European Union.

According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, Ukraine ranks 116th out of 180 countries, but efforts in recent years have seen its position improve significantly.
