GHANAIAN MEDIA URGED TO HELP COMBAT MIS/DISINFORMATION IN THE UPCOMING ELECTIONS

Ghanaian Journalists and Media Houses have been admonished to ensure that the upcoming elections are rid of misinformation and disinformation to help ensure a peaceful and successful elections come 7th December, 2024.

This came up during a forum on “Combating Misinformation and Disinformation for a Democratic Election” which was organised by Open Foundation West Africa in partnership with Wikimedia Foundation and Code for Africa.

The forum was held in Accra for journalists from various media houses across the country to help train them in combating misinformation and disinformation in the upcoming general elections.

Speaking with the media after the training, the Executive Director for Open Foundation West Africa, Jael Serwaa Boateng said, their main goal is to help Ghanaian and African Information go online to gain global recognition and therefore due to the upcoming election this year, they would like to help combat misinformation and disinformation on all various online platforms.

According to her, they are organizing the training for media houses to help clamp down on these misinformation and disinformation before, during, and after the elections.

She stressed that, they believe such fake information are all a recipe for war and disaster as far as the election is concerned so their focus is to ensure misinformation and disinformation are curbed for the country to witness another peaceful and successful elections.

Madam Serwaa Boateng admonished media houses to ensure that every content they share are accurate and true information that can not cause harm, fear and panic to the public.

She also urged Ghanaians to come together in helping combat misinformation and disinformation in any form in other for the country to have a peaceful, free and fair elections on December 7th.
