In a dramatic turn of events following the People’s National Convention (PNC) Flagbearer election on 7th September 2024, Hon. David Apasera, the 2020 flagbearer and leader of the PNC, has rejected the election outcome, raising serious concerns about the electoral process.
Apasera, who had been a contender for the PNC Flagbearer position, addressed the press in a conference to outline what he described as a flawed and unconstitutional election.
The congress, initially scheduled for 7th September, was put on hold due to an injunction filed by the North East Regional Secretary of the PNC. Apasera explained that he had followed due process by notifying the Electoral Commission (EC) of the injunction and had been reassured that the election would be postponed to 10th September.
However, to his surprise, EC officials reportedly conducted the election on the original date, resulting in the election of Bernard Anbataayela Mornah as the PNC’s Flagbearer with 1,138 votes to Apasera’s 216.
Apasera expressed his dismay at the low voter turnout in several regions, citing examples of regional voting participation as low as 40 or 52 people.
He questioned the fairness of the election, noting that several regions did not participate, which undermines the national character of the election, as required by the 1992 Constitution.
“I reject the outcome of the elections as held on 7th September 2024,” Apasera declared, accusing the EC of violating its own rules by conducting elections in the face of an injunction and failing to uphold democratic principles.
He pointed to irregularities in the transportation of ballot boxes and the overall management of the process, raising concerns about possible manipulation of the results.
The press conference follows Bernard Mornah’s declaration as Flagbearer and his call for unity within the party to end the NPP-NDC political dominance. Mornah, whose victory marked a significant moment for the PNC, had also paid tribute to Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and Dr. Hilla Liman, founding figures in Ghana’s political history.
However, Apasera’s strong rejection of the election result has deepened internal divisions within the PNC, casting uncertainty over the party’s readiness for the upcoming general elections.
He maintained that he remains the rightful leader of the PNC until a properly supervised national delegates conference can be held.
The ongoing dispute has thrown the party into turmoil, with Apasera vowing to do everything possible to ensure that the PNC fields a legitimate presidential candidate for the December 2024 elections.
